This is good evidence that allowing everyone to buy the bonuses would have no practical effect on me or the state of the game in general- But I do have those selfish instincts, and so do the other people who preordered, to varying degrees.Īs such, even though it is irrational for us to feel as though we are being robbed just because someone else can get the same thing as us, that is nevertheless what I understood Keen to be selling me- appeal-to-your-dark-human-nature stuff. It wouldn't be until I found out that they were selling the preorder items that I would feel any kind of reaction at all. It would have zero effect on my psychological state. The first thing which occurs to me is that other people having the golden throne won't affect me- at least not practically speaking. But it isn't reason, and I like to make my decisions based on reason. A root part of this brain's operating system says, "Collect resources and control others." It's one of the reasons we play games, and it's one reason the exclusive preorder rewards were tempting. It's an evolutionary holdover from a distant past. The "nobody else can get it" part is the bit that gives the real motivations away-it's just an instinct.
When I first read the idea of making those rewards available to everybody, rather than keeping them exclusive to me, I felt a familiar instinctive pang- Those preorder rewards make me special! I took a risk on an early access game when a lot of similar early access games have been abandoned or just shamble mindlessly in EA status for years, and I deserve to have that risk compensated for with crap that nobody else can get!
